Rain Acquires Merchant Wallet Startup Ansa, Expanding Beyond Card Issuing
Rain has acquired Ansa, adding branded fiat prepaid wallets and merchant stored-value technology to its dual Visa and Mastercard stablecoin card infrastructure. The move positions Rain to connect issuance, rewards, merchant acceptance and stablecoin settlement as Visa searches for a post-BVNK partner.

Rain acquired merchant wallet startup Ansa on August 12, adding branded, fiat-based prepaid wallets to a stablecoin payments business previously centered on cards, wallets and settlement. Deal terms were not disclosed, but the purchase gives Rain a merchant-facing stored-value layer that can sit in front of its dual Visa and Mastercard issuing infrastructure.[1]
The transaction changes the company’s commercial pitch. Rather than only helping a fintech or platform issue a card and settle value in stablecoins, Rain can now offer a merchant the wallet, balance logic, rewards and acceptance path that keeps a customer engaged before the payment reaches a card rail. CoinMarketCap AI identified the announcement as an expansion of Rain’s payment capabilities through fiat-based prepaid wallet technology.[5]
A merchant wallet joins the issuing stack
Ansa built branded, closed-loop wallets in which customers preload dollar balances and spend them with the merchant that issued the wallet. Its platform includes point-of-sale integrations, incentive tooling, reconciliation, fraud controls and redemption across app, web and store. A merchant already accepting Mastercard could accept an Ansa-powered stored balance using its existing terminal, while online and in-app transactions could be authorized through Ansa’s API.[1]
That is distinct from simply putting a stablecoin balance behind a card. Stored value lets a merchant specify who can spend, where they can spend, how much they can use and when a promotional balance expires. Those controls are useful for a venue, hotel, cruise operator or retail brand that wants a branded balance, rewards and repeat visits without forcing customers to learn a new payment experience.
“Every great merchant or consumer brand eventually wants their own version of the Starbucks wallet, but very few have the infrastructure to pull it off,” said Sophia Goldberg, Ansa’s founder, who is joining Rain as Head of Payments.[1]
Rain says a formerly closed-loop balance can now be extended beyond one merchant’s registers and accepted on Visa and Mastercard rails at participating businesses. That is the acquisition’s strategic center: it joins the merchant’s customer relationship to an open-loop spending option, while keeping stablecoin settlement and card operations inside one platform.[1]
Product layer — Rain before Ansa — Rain after Ansa
Card issuing — Stablecoin-powered prepaid and credit card programs — Card programs linked to merchant wallet and rewards experiences
Wallets — Embedded digital-dollar and stablecoin wallets — Adds branded, fiat-based stored-value and closed-loop wallets
Merchant acceptance — Card-network acceptance after issuance — Store, app and web wallet redemption, with potential extension to participating Visa and Mastercard merchants
Settlement — Stablecoin settlement and cross-border money movement — Same settlement layer paired with merchant balance, incentive and redemption data
A better-timed strategic asset
Rain enters the integration with considerable financial and network capacity. The company raised a $58 million Series B in August 2025 and a $250 million Series C led by ICONIQ in January 2026, when it was valued at $1.95 billion.[2] Reported cumulative funding is about $885 million.
Funding event — Date — Capital or value
Series B — August 2025 — $58 million
Series C, ICONIQ-led — January 2026 — $250 million; $1.95 billion valuation
Reported cumulative capital — August 2026 — About $885 million
CEO and co-founder Farooq Malik now has a product line that reaches closer to the merchant’s checkout and loyalty relationship, rather than only the payment credential. The timing has become more significant because Mastercard completed its acquisition of stablecoin orchestrator BVNK on August 3. That placed a key enterprise stablecoin infrastructure provider inside Mastercard Corporate Solutions and removed a formerly independent option from the market.[3]
On August 18, Visa sought a new stablecoin settlement partner to replace the role BVNK had held. Documents reviewed by CoinDesk said Visa’s request required multi-region licensing, the ability to swap and support several stablecoins, Open USD settlement capability, and licensing in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Singapore.[4] Visa did not name Rain or any other candidate. Still, Rain’s dual-network principal membership and newly broadened merchant-wallet product make it a credible strategic candidate, not a confirmed selection.
The new competitive comparison
Rain is not becoming a direct substitute for every stablecoin infrastructure company. Bridge, owned by Stripe, is associated with stablecoin payment and orchestration APIs; Zero Hash supplies regulated stablecoin infrastructure and powers Visa Direct’s announced USDC prefunding and payout capability; Fireblocks is centered on custody, wallet security and controlled stablecoin operations. Rain’s differentiator after Ansa is the connection between card issuing, merchant stored value and settlement in one product proposition.
Company — Core stablecoin payments position — Merchant and card implication
Rain — Dual-network card issuer with stablecoin settlement, wallets and now Ansa stored value — Can combine branded merchant balance, rewards, card issuance and broader participating-merchant acceptance
Bridge, Stripe — Stablecoin payment and orchestration infrastructure — Strong payments distribution, but no Ansa-style merchant wallet acquisition announced
Zero Hash — Regulated crypto infrastructure and Visa Direct stablecoin payouts — Important Visa-side settlement capability, with a different card-issuing and merchant-wallet proposition
Fireblocks — Institutional custody, wallet infrastructure and payment controls — Provides the operational and security layer, rather than a merchant-branded card-and-wallet package
The wider alliance picture also matters. Visa’s RFP explicitly includes Open USD, while Mastercard now owns BVNK. Rain’s dual-network status leaves it positioned to work with either network’s stablecoin initiatives, including an Open Standard OUSD ecosystem, although no such Rain integration has been announced.[3][4]
A separate market-data point should not be confused with the acquisition itself: CoinMarketCap AI listed RAIN as August’s largest scheduled token unlock at roughly $641 million. That supply event may shape token-market attention, but it does not disclose the price or integration timetable for Ansa.[5]
For merchants, the practical test will be whether Rain can turn Ansa’s closed-loop mechanics into programs that preserve a brand relationship while offering useful spending reach. If it can, Rain will have moved from issuing the payment instrument to helping merchants design the balance, incentive and acceptance experience that makes the instrument worth using.
