Japan's Three Megabanks Report Results of Joint Yen Stablecoin Pilot
The October 16 disclosure covers July testing of issuance, transfer and redemption, not a general customer launch.

MUFG Bank, Mizuho Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) have reported results from a joint yen-stablecoin proof of concept, alongside Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation and TISI Inc. Their October 16, 2026 announcement concerns testing conducted on July 17–23, rather than a new public launch.
The joint release describes a trust-based issuance arrangement and verification of issuance, transfer and redemption processes. It used a scenario assuming payments between Mitsubishi Corporation's Japanese and overseas locations.
Testing the operating arrangement
The banks acted as joint principal trustees, with Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation as agent trustee. The test also examined compliance and user protection.
That distinction shapes how to read the result. A transfer test can demonstrate that software moves a balance; an issuance-and-redemption exercise addresses a broader operating chain. Neither, by itself, answers which customers can obtain the instrument or what service levels they would receive.
The initiative received support through Japan's FSA FinTech PoC Hub. That support should not be described as a general product-launch licence. The participants say further assessments toward practical implementation will continue.
No general customer-access date was given.
